The Silver Fox breed was developed in the United States by Walter B. Garland as a dual purpose rabbit for meat and fur production. The original name was changed from the "American Heavyweight Silver" to "Silver Fox" in 1929.
Today the Silver Fox is considered a "Heritage Breed" breed after it's numbers dwindled near extinction in the 1970's. Due to the efforts of diligent breeders over the years, it's numbers have steadily increased, but the Silver Fox is still listed as rare breed by the ARBA.
The Silver Fox is a 'Class 6', or commercial meat type rabbit. The body should be heavily muscled. A side profile should have a steady rise from the shoulder to a thick loin peaking over the center of the hip. The hindquarters should be round, wide, and filled out with muscle all the way down to the floor.
The Silver Fox is distinguished by medium length fur which will have a "grippy" texture and is unique in it's ability to stay standing when stroked backwards, only returning once stroked in the opposite direction again. Silver guard hairs are scattered throughout the coat, including the head, feet, and ears. These hairs are evenly dispersed giving a sharp, bright look to the fur.
Black and Chocolate base colors are accepted on show tables throughout the United States, while the recessive colors of Blue, Lilac, and Ruby-Eyed-White are not. Though the Blue color variety of Silver Fox were originally recognized, it was later dropped and is now working on a Certificate of Development to be accepted once again as a showable variety of Silver Fox by the ARBA.
